Myc, UPR, antioxidants and autophagy

Dear JEDIs,

Did you know that the transcription factor Myc is required for autophagy, and vice versa, unfolded protein response-mediated autophagy and antioxidants are necessary to support the overgrowth of cells expressing oncogenic Myc in Drosophila larval and imaginal tissues? As wild-type cells grow just fine without autophagy or antioxidants, these experiments raise the possibility that Myc-induced overgrowth of cancer cells might be blocked by drugs inhibiting autophagy - exactly what recent papers on cultured human cells and mouse models are suggesting.
