Video tracking and analysis of sleep in Drosophila melanogaster

Some of you may be interested in a protocol that I have recently published on Nature Protocols, describing software and hardware equipment that we created in the lab, to measure activity in flies. All the software described in the protocol is released as Open Source and the hardware setup was conceived to be easy to use and inexpensive to build. In particular, video tracking monitor can be built using a cheap webcam - at the moment we are obtaining great results with the Playstation EYE (120FPS, £12) - and a food grade container that you can buy at the supermarket; an arena to host flies can be custom made using 3D printing technology.

The protocols comes with 6 supplementary Videos that can be downloaded directly from the journal website or accessed via youtube, also embedded below as playlist.
IMDB trivia: One of the videos was recorded at home and if you listen carefully, you can actually hear in the background my toddler screaming "PAPA!" at one point...
