18th -20th of October 2012, in Foz do Arelho, Portugal It is our pleasure to announce that the next JEDI meeting will take place from the 18th to the 20th of October 2012 at the hotel INATEL in the beautiful beach town of Foz do Arelho, Portugal. As a continuation of the inaugural JEDI meeting in 2011, the meeting will bring together independent Drosophila investigators in Europe at an early career stage and aims at fostering scientific, professional and personal exchanges in an informal setting. We want to continue the debate on how to strengthen the position of young team leaders within the established scientific community, how to create new, innovative and collaborative research structures within the new generation of Drosophila scientists, and finally on how to strengthen the awareness and support for Drosophila research within the European scientific environment. A detailed program will follow. Foz do Arelho is a charming small beach resort one and a half hours north of Lisbon surrounded by beautiful beaches and dramatic cliffs on the Atlantic Ocean. It is easily reachable from Lisbon by train and a subsequent short TAXI ride. The INATEL hotel is five minutes from the beach and very family friendly. Local activities include hiking, swimming, and surfing and the lagoon is perfect for kids. We would like to encourage people to come with family with the possibility of remaining for the weekend following the meeting.
We are very excited to launch a new European initiative in the field of Drosophila Neuroscience and are currently recruiting candidate PhD students for this programme. Our lab at the Champalimaud Foundation Neuroscience Programme in Lisbon is a member of the new Marie Curie Research Training Network FLiACT which will start on the 1st of January 2012 and will run for four years, supported by the European Commission. This initiative will host 12 Ph.D. students. The FLiACT fellows will seek to elucidate how neural circuit computation directs stereotypical behaviours and how circuit-function relationships are genetically encoded in Drosophila. We are now recruiting PhD student candidates for the network and would like to encourage you to direct candidates to this opportunity and to disseminate this email and the attached poster. Research within the network will be conducted in 8 European academic laboratories and 3 private companies (SMEs). Each partner is specialized in a different field of neurobiology. Through collaborative projects, visitor exchanges and workshops, the FLiACT fellows will have the opportunity to receive theoretical and practical training in disciplines as diverse as molecular and behavioural neurogenetics, electrophysiology and bioengineering. The fellows will benefit from career mentoring from the FLiACT community to increase their career prospects in both the academic and the private sectors. FLiACT fellows will be offered a competitive salary (41-57 k?/year depending on the host country) as well as travel and mobility allowances.
I am looking for candidates to take up postdoctoral positions (PhD positions may also be available for unusually talented students) in the López-Schier group, when it moves to Germany to the Helmholtz Zentrum München early in 2012, for the following four research lines: 1) Develop a project on cellular mechanics during tissue regeneration and repair, mainly applying a combination of high-end quantitative live imaging, cell biological and genetic approaches and computer modeling. This project is ideal for a biologist with a background in informatics, or a physicist or an engineer. The model system of choice is the zebrafish or Drosophila. 2) Develop a project on cellular neurobiology in Drosophila. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in fly genetics or electrophysiology. Candidates should be ambitious and independent. Recent doctorates (or about to obtain a PhD). At least one first-author publication in a high-profile journal is a must for postdoctoral candidates. Applications should include a letter of presentation, a CV and the names and contact information of three academic references.
