Spot the difference – sex differences in the fly brain

This is old news, not new news, but since Pavel is exhorting us to put up some publications, I thought I would catch up by going back to the first primary article from our group at the LMB:

Cachero S., Ostrovsky A.D., Yu J.Y., Dickson B.J., and Jefferis G.S.X.E. (2010). Sexual Dimorphism in the Fly Brain. Current Biology doi:10.1016/j.cub.2010.07.045

In this paper we identify what should be the majority (but not quite all – see doublesex) of the anatomical differences between male and female fly brains both at the level of gross anatomy and clusters of a 20 or so neurons derived from specific neuroblasts. As a puzzle see if you can identify some of the neuropil differences between male and female brains that are visible in these two images:

Click through and mouse over the image for a hint and go here to find out more or get the source code, raw and processed images for our study.

This paper was published alongside a collaborative one primarily carried out by Barry Dickson’s student Jai Yu. Fellow JEDI Richard Benton previewed these two papers along with a third from Richard Axel.

Best,

Greg.
